‘Doors of the World’ Opening a Door into another Cultural World
If you’re opening the door of the house and spot someone zooming in with his camera, don’t get mad right away! If that’s Andre Vicente Goncalves taking the photographs, you are probably part of his Doors of the World project.
Andre is not a snooper! He is actually a photographer who has a serious ‘addiction’ to windows. In fact, He is already well-known for his ongoing Windows of the World project.
Windows of the World is actually a photo shooting project which portrays the unique window designs around Europe. After creating plenty of window collages, Andre’s addiction has recently turned to the heart of every building facade, the doors.
As a traveler, Andre is always looking for inspirations that help him learn more about different cultures. In this case, he is inspired by the designs of doors in different parts of the world, which are amazing examples of cultural diversity.
Andre is astonished by the way that such a small element of architecture expresses so much about its inhabitants and the human sense of security.
The ongoing project shoots photographs from different cities and regions, and highlights the many beautiful doors along the way. By creating collages of his photographs from each specific region, Andre artfully reveals trends and styles that dominate the area.
Doors of the World thus demonstrates how architecture has evolved in ways almost out of the hands of architects.
Is he a Burglar?
According to Andre, no one usually approaches him while taking photos in the big cities. However when he’s photographing the small towns, people sometimes come close and ask him why. Aside from curiosity, the reason chiefly is that they are afraid of burglars. In order to allay their concerns, Andre usually keeps and shows them images of his previous works on his cell phone.
Andre says he has a dream of collecting photos of doors and windows from every country, Even though he realizes that It will take a long time to fulfill his dream.
We often think of a door as something practical. That is to say a door in our view, is just a necessary item of the building which is just there to be opened and closed. However, the Doors of the World project reminds us that there is more to doors than meets the eye. They’re also there to be admired.
A Flashback to the ‘Windows of the World’ Project
Andre’s window shooting project has been around longer than his current Doors of the World. Consequently there are much more collages in his window collection.
